Founded in 1970, the Portland Trail Blazers have had something of an up-and-down history in the NBA, culminating in one sole NBA Championship and a number of Conference and Divisional titles.

One and Only NBA Championship

The Trail Blazers joined the NBA as an expansion team in 1970, and their first few seasons in the league were by no means memorable, but that was reversed in a big way in 1976-77 when the team secured their first, and to date only, NBA Championship as they saw off the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA Finals in six games.

Their star player in this period was Bill Walton, and the Championship, secured in the first season with Jack Ramsay as head coach, was one they couldn't maintain, albeit in 1977-78, they did top the Western Conference before bowing out to the Seattle SuperSonics in the first round of the playoffs.

So Near, Yet to Far

The team made it to the NBA Final in two out of the first three seasons under Rick Adelman, with Clyde Drexler proving very effective; however, Portland lost to the Detroit Pistons in 1989-90 and to the Chicago Bulls two years later.

Successes have been few and far between since those Finals appearances and recent years have seen them make fleeting appearances in the playoffs, with Damian Lillard being the current fan favorite, who arguably deserves to have more to show for his career at this stage.

Arch Rivals

Their biggest rivals come in the shape of the Los Angeles Lakers, with their rivalry dating all the way back to the Conference Final in 1976-77, where the Trail Blazers thumped their opponents in four games.

Any event between these two sides is particularly vociferous.

The Portland Trail Blazers play their home games at the Moda Center and have done so since 1995, and the venue has a seating capacity of 19,393.

Portland Trail Blazers games are always well attended, and support for the team, despite the relative lack of success, is still very high. Events involving the team are almost always played out to near-capacity attendance.
