Seattle Sounders History

Seattle Sounders FC was established in 2007 as an expansion team in Major League soccer. The Sounders made their MLS debut in 2009 and remarkably finished just 1 point off top spot in the Western Conference.

The Sounders qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs in each of their first five seasons playing in MLS, but mostly struggled to progress to the final rounds. Seattle finished top of both the Western Conference and the overall standings in 2014, advancing straight to the Conference semi-finals, but later suffered a narrow defeat to LA Galaxy in the Conference finals.

Seattle won the MLS Cup for the first time in 2016, having overcome three play-off matches before beating Toronto FC in the final. The same two teams contested the MLS Cup final the following year, however this time the Canadian outfit came out on top.

The Sounders reclaimed the MLS Cup in 2019, seeing off Toronto in the final, after also eliminating Los Angeles FC in the Conference finals. Seattle returned to the MLS Cup final to defend its crown the following year, but lost 3-0 to Columbus Crew.

The side from Seattle has also regularly played in the CONCACAF Champions League, winning the tournament in 2022. The Sounders beat Mexican side UNAM Pumas in the final, qualifying for the subsequent FIFA Club World Cup.

• Goalkeeper Stefan Frei has made more appearances for the Sounders than any other player, with more than 350 outings to his name. USA midfielder Cristian Roldán has also played more than 300 times for Seattle.
• Ex-Colombia striker Fredy Montero was Seattle's all-time top-scorer when he departed the club in 2023. He netted 79 goals in 247 games for the Sounders. Peru forward Raúl Ruidíaz equalled the tally of Montero's in 2024, but did so in considerably fewer matches than his former teammate.
• Jordan Morris has been another popular name among the Seattle Sounders dressing room, with more than 200 appearances and 65 goals to his name.
• Clint Dempsey spent the final years of his playing career with the Sounders, after playing more than 200 games in the English Premier League with Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur.
• Freddie Ljungberg, who played more than 300 times for Arsenal, enjoyed an 18-month spell with Seattle from 2009-10. The former Sweden international signed with the Sounders ahead of their MLS debut.
• Obafemi Martins scored 43 goals in 84 matches for Seattle, having previously represented Inter Milan and Newcastle United in Europe.

Seattle Sounders Rivalries

The Sounders have rivalries with both the Portland Timbers and the Vancouver Whitecaps, with all three teams based in the Pacific Northwest. These feuds date back to pre-MLS times and were reignited in 2011 when both the Timbers and the Whitecaps joined Major League Soccer as expansion teams.

Lumen Field has been the home ground of the Sounders since 2009, when the team first started playing Major League Soccer. The ground generally has a capacity around 37,000 for soccer matches, but can expand to more than double that figure for special events.
