History of Anfield Stadium

Named after the surrounding area, Anfield first opened back in 1884. The ground initially served as the home of Everton until 1892, when a dispute escalated between committee members of Everton FC and John Houlding, who was the original owner of the land.

It was agreed that Everton would move to Goodison Park, less than a mile up the road, while Houlding proceeded to form Liverpool Football Club to occupy the empty Anfield stadium.

Anfield has undergone a number of renovations over the years, particularly the expansion of the Main Stand which was completed in 2016. This £114-million project increased the Anfield capacity from 45,000 to 54,000 seats.

More recently, Liverpool FC embarked on an expansion project in 2021. This saw the total capacity increased further to 61,276, making it one of the very biggest stadiums in the English Premier League.

Anfield Facilities

The Spion Kop, commonly known simply as 'the Kop', is the southernmost stand at Anfield. A single-tier terrace, the Kop sits directly behind the goalposts opposite to the Anfield Road Stand. The Kop is widely regarded as the heart of the atmosphere at Anfield.

The players' tunnel leads directly onto the pitch from the Main Stand, which is the largest of the four stands with up to 20,676 spectators able to be seated here. The Main Stand faces the Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand, formerly known as the Centenary Stand.

There are also two gates, the Shankly Gates and the Paisley Gateway, named after former Liverpool managers Bill Shankly & Bob Paisley, respectively.
