The Cleveland Cavaliers joined the NBA along with fellow expansion teams Portland Trail Blazers and the Buffalo Braves in 1970; the Cavs play in the Central Division of the NBA Eastern Conference.

It would be fair to say that life in the NBA, up until the early 90s, was something of a struggle for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

They suffered losing seasons in each of their first five seasons but finally made it to the NBA playoffs in 1975-76, only to lose out to the Boston Celtics in Conference Finals.

During the 90s, they regularly lost out to a Chicago Bulls side led by a certain player by the name of Michael Jordan, who was very much a thorn in the Cleveland side, with the decorated legend helping to eliminate the Cavaliers in both 1991-92 and 1992-93, with star turns Brad Daugherty, Larry Nance, and Mark Price unable to prevent playoff defeats in five successive seasons.

Arguably the most important event that has occurred in the entire history of the Cleveland Cavaliers was when they drafted a young LeBron James in the 2003 NBA draft, one of six times they've been awarded the first overall draft pick (the others being Austin Carr, Brad Daugherty, Kyrie Irving, Anthony Bennett, and Andrew Wiggins).

In his first season, the team went from 17 regular season wins to 35, and more was yet to come.

Over the course of his two separate spells at the franchise, between 2003-2010 and 2014-2018, LeBron James secured their one and only NBA Championship in 2015-16, as well as NBA finals losses on four other occasions, where they invariably lost to the Golden State Warriors.

Since LeBron left to join the Los Angeles Lakers, the Cleveland Cavaliers have struggled for form, though in 2021-22, they did secure a winning season for the first time in four attempts.
