My Chemical Romance History

My Chemical Romance formed in 2001 and in 2002, they released their debut studio album, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love. Their lineup at this juncture included frontman Gerard Way, Ray Toro, Mikey Way and Matt Pelissier.

The record was a moderate success, and two years later, their second effort, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge (released on Reprise Records), really helped to build the band's reputation in the field. The album sold over a million records in the United States alone and spawned singles I'm Not Okay (I Promise), Thank You for the Venom and Helena.

By this point, Frank Iero had been welcomed into the band, and Matt Pelissier had left.

In 2005 their live act started to reach new heights as they were added to the bill on the Taste of Chaos Tour before then acting as the opening act for Green Day on their enormous American Idiot tour. They then took things up a notch by co-headlining with Fall Out Boy on the Warped Tour 2005, helping the group to secure some additional exposure.

Their seminal album, The Black Parade, followed in 2006 and proved a monster hit, selling over four million copies worldwide. It reached number two on the charts in both the US and the UK. The title track was a big success on the singles chart, with Famous Last Word, I Don't Love You, and Teenagers also performing solidly.

They returned in 2010 with their fourth studio album, Danger Days: The True Lives Of the Fabulous Killjoys, which charted well across North America and Europe. In 2013, after releasing a compilation album, Conventional Weapons and another the year later (May Death Never Stop You), the group broke up.

Bob Bryar served as drummer for the band from 2004 to 2010 before he left to be replaced by touring musician Jarrod Alexander.

At this point they were the favorite band for many, and to this day, many connect a period they loved MCR with when they were at middle school, and the devotion that fans feel towards My Chemical Romance is very visceral, and it's evident at every show.

The group reunited in 2019 and in 2022 they released their first new single in eight years, with The Foundations of Decay proving a big comeback success that drew acclaim from critics as well as their fan base.

Founder Gerard Way has successfully moved into comic book writing, producing The Umbrella Academy, which has gone on to become a hugely successful Netflix show. However, he and his bandmates are still very much focused on all things My Chemical Romance related. Meanwhile, his brother Mikey formed a new band, Electric Century and also played with other acts.
