Inter Milan vs AC Milan History

The founding of Inter Milan came about as a result of a split at AC Milan in the early 20th century. The latter had been formed in 1899, though a rift over international players representing the Rossoneri led to a breakaway club being established. Thus, a rivalry was born and has since evolved into one of the biggest derbies on the football calendar.

When the two teams met for the first time in 1909, AC Milan claimed a 3-2 victory over their newly-formed rivals. Despite having won three league titles by the time Inter was founded, AC Milan struggled to maintain their dominance and subsequently went more than 40 years without claiming league honours. In 1951, the Rossoneri won the Serie A for the first time.

The rivalry escalated in the 1950s as these clubs won six league titles between them. Both Inter and AC Milan achieved success in Europe the following decade, first the latter in 1963 followed by the men in blue the following year. Inter retained the European Cup in 1965, as Spanish midfielder Luis Suárez was instrumental in the rise of the Nerazzurri to the throne of both of Italian and European football.

Neither Inter nor AC Milan were particularly dominant in the 70s and 80s, though the latter enjoyed what was its most fruitful period in the 1990s. The Rossoneri captured the Scudetto four times in five years, in addition to three European Cup / UEFA Champions League titles between 1988 and 1995. Ruud Gullit, Marco van Basten and Frank Rijkaard – all Netherlands internationals at the time – were at the face of AC Milan's success during this period.

AC Milan continued to dominate the derby in the early 2000s, as world-class pros such as Paolo Maldini, Gennaro Gattuso, Clarence Seedorf, and Andrea Pirlo starred for the Rossoneri. Inter had a tough task in catching up to their rivals, but the men in blue and black did so in remarkable fashion – clinching five successive Scudetti from 2006-10. José Mourinho was appointed Inter manager in 2008, and he steered the Nerazzurri to an elusive Treble (Serie A, Coppa Italia, and Champions League) in 2009/10.

Inter became only the second Italian club to win the Italian top flight 19 times, doing so in 2021 for the club's first Scudetto since 2010. The following year AC Milan equalled this tally, also claiming a first Serie A title for 11 years.

AC Milan have won the European Cup / Champions League on seven occasions, compared to three for Inter, as of the end of the 2022/23 season. Inter reached the UEFA Champions League final in 2023, but ultimately lost to Premier League giants Manchester City.

The following players have moved directly from Inter to AC Milan:

• Giuseppe Meazza, after whom the San Siro is officially named, is best known for his time with Inter, having made more than 400 appearances for the Nerazzurri. The forward left the club for their local rivals in 1940, but later returned to Inter prior to bringing an end to his playing career. Meazza scored 12 goals for Inter against AC Milan. He earned 53 caps for Italy, winning back-to-back FIFA World Cup titles with the Azzurri in the 1930s, and he also later had two spells as manager of Inter.

• Andrea Pirlo signed for Inter in 1998. He was subject to a couple of loan spells away from the San Siro before agreeing a switch to AC Milan in 2001. The Italy midfielder went on to make more than 400 appearances for the Rossoneri, lifting the World Cup with his country along the way, before departing for Juventus in 2011.

• Christian Vieri completed a €49m move from Lazio to Inter in 1999, a world record fee at the time. The centre-forward remained with Inter until moving to AC Milan on a free transfer in 2005.

• AC Milan acquired Clarence Seedorf in 2002, just two years after the Netherlands international had signed for Inter from Real Madrid. Seedorf remained with Milan for a decade, amassing 432 outings for the club, and he became the first player to win the Champions League with three different clubs: Ajax, Real Madrid, and Milan.
