Inter Milan vs AC Milan History

The founding of Inter Milan came about as a result of a split at AC Milan in the early 20th century. The latter had been formed in 1899, though a rift over international players representing the Rossoneri led to a breakaway club being established. Thus, a rivalry was born and has since evolved into one of the biggest derbies on the football calendar.

When the two teams met for the first time in 1909, AC Milan claimed a 3-2 victory over their newly-formed rivals. Despite having won three league titles by the time Inter was founded, AC Milan struggled to maintain their dominance and subsequently went more than 40 years without claiming league honours. The rivalry escalated in the 1950s as these clubs won six league titles between them. • Giuseppe Meazza, after whom the San Siro is officially named, is best known for his time with Inter, having made more than 400 appearances for the Nerazzurri. The forward left the club for their local rivals in 1940, but later returned to Inter prior to bringing an end to his playing career. Meazza scored 12 goals for Inter against AC Milan. He earned 53 caps for Italy, winning back-to-back FIFA World Cup titles with the Azzurri in the 1930s, and he also later had two spells as manager of Inter.
