Inter Milan vs Juventus History

This is widely considered the most intense fixture between two clubs from different cities within Italy. The first-ever meeting between these classic rivals took place in 1909, though it wasn’t until the 60s that the term “Derby d’Italia” was coined by an Italian sports journalist.

Juventus are by far the most decorated club in Italian football, with no fewer than 36 league titles, of which all but two have come in the Serie A era. ‘La Vecchia Signora’ (The Old Lady) hoisted five league championships in the 1970s and a further four the following decade.

The Turin-based club enjoyed its most fruitful spell in the 2010s, winning nine successive Serie A titles beginning in 2012. This took Juve to a record-extending 36th Scudetto in 2020, double the tally of Inter at the time.

Inter Milan embarked on its first true golden period in the 60s, hoisting three Serie A successes in addition to back-to-back European Cup triumphs. 40 years went by before the Nerazzurri claimed consecutive league titles again, though they did so in spectacular fashion by celebrating the Scudetto five seasons in a row until 2009/10. It was also around this time that Juventus had been relegated to Serie B as punishment for the club’s involvement in the Calciopoli scandal.

After going 11 years without being crowned champions of Italy, during which time Juventus asserted its dominance, Inter finally captured Serie A honours again in 2021.

Giuseppe Meazza, after whom the San Siro is officially named, played for both these clubs and scored a total 12 goals in the Derby d’Italia. Former Juventus forward Alessandro Del Piero netted nine times against Inter.

Several players (and even managers) have represented both Inter and Juventus down the years:

• Roberto Baggio played 200 times for Juventus before moving to AC Milan in 1995. The attacker later signed for Inter, following a short stay at Bologna.

• Andrea Pirlo left Inter in 2001, swaying his allegiance to city rivals AC Milan. The Italy midfielder remained in the red half of Milano until Juventus swooped in for him in 2011.

• Fabio Cannavaro signed with Inter in 2002, two years before switching directly to Juventus. The central defender was acquired by Real Madrid in 2006 after he captained Italy to World Cup glory.

• Brazil centre-back Lúcio joined Inter in 2009, from Bayern Munich, and he played an integral part in the Nerazzurri winning a historic Treble in his first season at the club. Lúcio completed a free transfer to Juventus in 2012, though he was limited to just four outings for the Bianconeri.

• Antonio Conte made north of 400 appearances for Juventus and was later named manager of the club in 2011. He guided the Old Lady to three consecutive Scudetti during his time at the helm. Conte then took up the same job at Inter in 2019 and subsequently steered the team to a first Serie A title for 11 years.

In April 2010, Inter picked up a 2-0 win in this fixture on their way to wrapping up a fifth successive Scudetto. Maicon and Samuel Eto’o were on the scoresheet on this occasion at San Siro.
