FC Twente History & Info

Formed in 1965 as a merger between two club, FC Twente is one of the youngest competitors in Dutch professional football. The club is based in the city of Enschede.

Twente earned a 3rd-place finish just four years after being founded and followed this up with several top-five finishes in the years to follow. The Tukkers were involved in an intense title race with Feyenoord Rotterdam in the 1973/74 season, though the latter ultimately captured the title by a mere 2 points.

FC Twente won a first major trophy in 1977, defeating PEC Zwolle 3-0 in the KNVB Beker final. This would remain the club's only piece of silverware for almost 25 years until Twente overcame PSV Eindhoven, on penalties, to lift the Dutch Cup for a second time.

In 2010, manager Steve McClaren guided the Tukkers to their first-ever league title, edging heavyweights Ajax by just a single point. The following year Twente celebrated their third triumph in the Dutch Cup, thanks to a 3-2 victory over Ajax at De Kuip.

FC Twente Enschede then endured a slump, cascading down the table and even dropping out of the Eredivisie at the end of the 2017/18 season. The appointment of Ron Jans as head coach in 2020 saw the Tukkers rise from mid-to-lower table to the top places and in contention for Europa League and even Champions League football.

Twente competed in the UEFA Cup (precursor to the Europa League) semi-regularly in the 1970s and again in the 90s, and even lost out to Borussia Monchengladbach in the 1975 UEFA Cup final.

Steve McClaren was in charge when FC Twente played in UEFA Champions League qualifying in 2008 and again the following year, though the Dutch side bowed out to Arsenal and then Portuguese outfit Sporting CP.

Finally in 2010 the Tukkers experienced true Champions League football for the first time, featuring in the group stage after being crowned Eredivisie champions the season prior. Twente shared a group with Tottenham, Inter Milan & Werder Bremen, and managed to avoid defeat in all three home games.

FC Twente finished 3rd in the group and were therefore demoted to the Europa League. The Dutch team advanced to the quarter-finals before crashing out to Villarreal. The following year Twente progressed to the Europa League Round of 16 but lost to FC Schalke.
