The club was founded in 1881 as Watford Rovers. The club played at various grounds in the town but left in 1893 due to financial difficulties. From 1907, the team played at Vicarage Road.
Watford joined the Football League in 1920. The club has been promoted eleven times since joining the League, never dropping below Level 2 (the second tier of English football).
