Sparta Prague History

The club was founded in 1893 and has gone on to become the most decorated football team in all of the Czech Republic.

Sparta Prague reached the European Cup quarter-finals twice in the 60s and once again in 1985. In the modern Champions League era, Železná Sparta (Iron Sparta) regularly featured in UEFA's premier club competition in the late 90s and early 2000s, but more often than not failed to progress from the group stages.

Sparta advanced to the Europa League quarter-finals in 2015/16, crashing out to Spanish side Villarreal. The Czech side had also reached this stage back in 1984, when the competition was still under its UEFA Cup guise. Sparta were subject to a last-16 exit at the hands of AC Milan in 1995/96.

Domestically, however, Sparta continues to maintain its title as the most successful club in Czechia. Železná won a record-extending 34th league title in 2023, with local rivals Slavia Prague the closest competitor on 20 championships at the time.

Sparta Prague Today

Sparta continue to maintain their status as the most successful team in Czechia, and look to further widen the gap between them and local rivals Slavia Prague.

In the 2023/24 season, Sparta were drawn against Liverpool in the UEFA Europa League Round of 16.

Sparta Prague Best Players

Some of the most prominent Czech Republic international footballers have donned the badge of Sparta Prague over the years.

Pavel Nedved played almost 100 times for the club before going on to enjoy a prominent 13-year spell in Italy. The midfielder made a combined 535 appearances for Lazio and Juventus, and famously won the prestigious Ballon d'Or in 2003 during his time at the Turin-based team.

Petr Čech spent a single season at Sparta Prague before moving to French side Rennes and later Chelsea. Čech racked up almost 500 appearances for the Blues, winning four Premier League titles as well as the UEFA Champions League, having saved an important spot-kick in the penalty shootout versus Bayern Munich. The goalkeeper also earned 124 caps with the national team.

Jan Koller is the top scorer for the Czech national team, having scored 55 goals in his 91 caps. The striker signed for Sparta Prague in 1994, aged 21, but made no more than 40 appearances before departing. Koller went on to score 79 goals in 184 outings for Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund.

Just like his countryman Koller, Tomáš Rosický was also a Dortmund player from 2001-06 though he had joined directly from Sparta Prague. Born in the Czech capital, Rosický was at Sparta from a very young age and in 1999 the attacking midfielder made his senior debut for his boyhood club. He retired with 105 international caps as well as heaps of experience playing at the highest level, particularly from his decade-long association with Arsenal.

Patrik Berger spent the final 18 months of his playing career at Sparta Praha, despite having started his senior career at crosstown rivals Slavia Prague; he played twice as many games with the latter. Berger also represented Liverpool and Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Centre-back Jiří Novotný played more than 300 times for Sparta Prague, as did former goalkeeper Jaromír Blažek. David Lafata is the top scorer in the history of this club, with 111 goals. Former striker Horst Siegl also netted more than 100 times for Sparta Prague. Lafata is the all-time record goalscorer in the Czech First League, with 198 goals to his name.
