Canada National Soccer Team History

The Canadian Soccer Association was established in 1912 and it first gained affiliation with FIFA that same year.

The first match (officially) involving the Canada national soccer team came in 1924. It was against Australia, in Brisbane, and the home team claimed a 3-2 win. Canada would also regularly contest friendlies against neighbours United States.

Only in the 70s did Canada first take part in a major tournament, at the CONCACAF Gold Cup of 1977. The Canadians took fourth-place out of six, as Mexico won this competition for a third time.

Canada played at the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 1986, but didn't celebrate much success at the tournament held in Mexico.

In 2022, Canada achieved its highest-ever FIFA ranking of 33rd.

Canada at Major Tournaments

The 1986 FIFA World Cup was the first of its kind to feature the Canada national team. Les Rouges ultimately exited at the group stage, without a win and having failed to score a goal against France, the Soviet Union and Hungary.

After more than 30 years away from the biggest stage in international soccer, Canada returned to the World Cup by qualifying for the 2022 edition. Despite once again crashing out from the groups without recording any points, the Canadians did score their first-ever goal at the World Cup finals as Alphonso Davies netted against Croatia.

Canada are certain to participate in the 2026 event as they prepare to co-host the spectacle together with Mexico and the United States.

The men in red have regularly played in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, having first entered the tournament in 1977. A maiden Gold Cup title came in 1985, followed by a second in 2000. Canada have also reached the semi-finals on multiple occasions. Canada also took part in the 1984 Olympic Games and reached the quarter-finals of the soccer tournament.

Les Rouges qualified for the Copa America tournament for the first time in 2024.
