West Ham United, initially founded under the name of Thames Ironworks back in 1895 is a top-tier English football lineup that has been competing in the Premier League for 23 seasons. While the latest relegation hit The Irons back in 2011, West Ham has neither particularly excelled, nor has it fallen too close to the danger zone in recent years. The best result West Ham has seen in the Premier League (back then known as the First Division) came during the 1985/86 season under the John Lyall’s leadership that skyrocketed the team to a 3rd position finish at the Boleyn Ground, right behind Everton and table-toppers Liverpool. Today, Manuel Pellegrini - former Manchester City boss - is leading the charge in a bid to climb the ladder with star player Manuel Lanzini at the forefront, followed by Samir Nasri, Mark Noble, Pedro Obiang and company. In a shocking turn of events, at the end of the 2015/16 season, West ham left Boleyn Grounds where the team had been competing for the last 112 years and moved to London Stadium, where it has been residing since.
Under former West Ham player turned manager, Slaven Bilić, The Irons were pushed into the relegation zone last season. This negative outcome brought with it major changes in the team’s management. David Moyes took over from Bilić who was ultimately sacked but ended up leaving the club himself only six months into his contract. The lack of consistency seen both in management as well as players saw West Ham forced to settle for a 13th Premier League finish, only nine points away from the drop zone.
West Ham’s runs in the FA Cup and EFL Cup didn’t prove anymore successful either. The team got knocked out in the 4th round of the FA Cup by Wigan Athletic and conceded to Arsenal in the EFL Cup quarter-finals.
West Ham played at Boleyn Ground, also known as Upton Park, from 1904 up until 2016, when it was closed. The stadium had a total capacity of 35,016 seats and served as home grounds for The Irons for an outstanding 112 years. Since 2016, the team has been performing at the considerably larger London Stadium (otherwise known as the Olympic Stadium or The Stadium at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park) with a regulated capacity of 60,000 and a seated capacity of 66,000.
West Ham has celebrated its share of success along the years. The Irons are currently holding three FA Cup titles and clinched the European Cup Winners Cup back in 1965. Even though ending their campaign as runner-ups, The Irons did reach the final stages of two major European competitions and have never fallen into a third-tier football division, despite the 2011/12 season’s outcome.
West Ham and Millwall share a rivalry that can be traced back to their first-ever encounter in the FA Cup, almost 120 years ago. Separated by only a three-mile drive, the teams are still disputing their supremacy in what’s known today as the Dockers derby.
