West Ham United vs Brentford History

The history between these clubs stretches back to the tail end of the 19th century. Their first on-field meeting was contested during the 1898/99 season, in the second tier of the Southern League which was independent from the Football League established in 1888.

After 26 meetings, West Ham and Brentford clashed in the FA Cup for the first time in 1927. They played out a 1-1 draw at Upton Park before Brentford won the Fourth Round replay at Griffin Park, by two goals to zero.

In 1933, for the first time, these teams met in the Football League. They continued to meet regularly in the Second Division following WWII until Brentford were relegated to the Third Division in 1954.

They went almost 40 years without facing one another, with West Ham participating in the top flight for much of that period.

The Hammers became three-time winners of the FA Cup in 1980. They reached the final in 2006, but lost to Liverpool.

More recently, in 2023, West Ham won the UEFA Conference League. At the time, Brentford had not yet won a first major trophy.

• Saïd Benrahma signed for Brentford in 2018, moving from French side OGC Nice to the English capital. In 2021, West Ham paid an initial £5m loan fee before completing the £25m acquisition of the Algeria winger.

• Winston Reid spent 11 years as a West Ham player, racking up more than 220 appearances for the Irons. In 2021, he joined Brentford on loan and helped steer the Bees towards securing promotion to the Premier League for the first time.

In 1992/93, the season in which the Football League reformatted, both these teams played in the second tier which had become known as the First Division.

Almost four decades had passed since their most-recent clashes in 1953/54, and another 28 years went by until West Ham and Brentford contested a Premier League match for the first time. Beyond the Premier League era, this was also the first-ever top-flight fixture between these clubs.

Brentford beat West Ham home and away in the 2021/22 season, with Bryan Mbeumo amongst the goals on both occasions.

In 2022/23, Ivan Toney opened the scoring as the Bees once again claimed victory at London Stadium.
