These teams first met on New Year’s Day 1924, in a 2-0 win in favour of West Ham.
Looking back, Sheffield Utd were champions of the First Division in 1898 and won a maiden FA Cup title the following year. The Blades have since collected three more FA Cup titles – in 1902, 1915, and 1925.
West Ham are three-time winners of the FA Cup, most recently in 1980. The Irons were crowned UEFA Conference League champions in 2023.
Sheffield Utd and West Ham were famously embroiled in a relegation scrap in the 2006/07 Premier League season. There was a great deal of controversy surrounding the acquisition of Carlos Tevez, who played a vital role in helping West Ham retain its status in the top flight. A 1-1 draw at Upton Park forced a replay at Bramall Lane, which also ended all square, and Sheffield Utd won the penalty shootout to progress. The Blades were later knocked out by eventual winners Arsenal; the Gunners beat Manchester United, on penalties, in the final at Wembley.
In April 2007, Sheffield Utd beat West Ham by three goals to nil in this fixture, though it was not enough for the Blades to avoid the drop. Over the following years, the Sheffield-based side mostly played in the Championship and meetings with the Hammers became few and far between.
