Sheffield United vs AFC Bournemouth History
It wasn’t until the 1981/82 season of the Fourth Division that these clubs shared a pitch for the first time. The following year, Sheffield Utd and AFC Bournemouth were both promoted to the Third Division.
In 1987, the teams met in the second tier of the English football pyramid. Three years later, the Blades and the Cherries contested a fixture in the FA Cup for the first time.
Sheffield Utd were 2-0 victors in this Third Round tie at Bramall Lane, before losing to eventual winners Manchester United in the quarter-finals.

• Aaron Ramsdale joined the Sheffield United Academy aged 15. He first appeared for the Blades’ first-team in 2017, before moving to Bournemouth for a transfer fee in the region of £800k. He returned to Bramall Lane in 2020, in a deal worth a reported £18,5m – almost 25-times the fee received for the young England goalkeeper three years earlier.
• David Brooks switched to Sheffield United’s under-18 team from Manchester City in 2014. The Wales winger signed for Bournemouth in 2018, in a deal worth around £11m.
• In 2019, Sheffield United paid a club-record fee of £10m to Bournemouth for France youth international Lys Mousset.
Sheffield United vs AFC Bournemouth Head-to-Head
Towards the end of the 20th century and into the early years of the 21st, Bournemouth generally played in the lower divisions of the Football League.
More than 20 years went by until Sheffield Utd and Bournemouth clashed in 2011/12. Meeting in League One, the reformatted third tier, the Sheffield-based side beat the Cherries home and away.
The following season Sheffield Utd again got the better of Bournemouth, though it was the latter that secured promotion to the EFL Championship.
The first-ever top-flight fixture between these clubs came in the 2019/20 Premier League campaign. Both fixtures involving Sheffield Utd and Bournemouth had already been played before the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions came into effect, with a draw at Dean Court (Vitality Stadium) followed by a 2-1 win for the Blades at Bramall Lane.
In 2021/22, they clashed in the second tier of English football for the first time in 32 years. This fixture – only their 19th in history – ended goalless shortly before Bournemouth earned promotion to the Premier League.
