Sheffield United vs Burnley History
These clubs shared a pitch for the first time in the First Round of the FA Cup, back in 1890. Sheffield United were the winners, by two goals to one.
In 1893/94, five years after the Football League was established, the teams contested a league fixture for the first time. Sheffield Utd and Burnley each won their home fixture in this particular season of the First Division.
They met in the 1914 FA Cup semi-finals at Old Trafford; a goalless draw forced a replay at Goodison Park where Burnley recorded a 1-0 victory.
The Clarets advanced to the final and defeated Liverpool to capture their first (and so far only) FA Cup title. The following year, Sheffield Utd won this trophy for a third time.
In 1929, Sheffield Utd won this fixture by a staggering 10 goals to zero in the old First Division.
The Blades beat Burnley in the Third Round of the 1936 FA Cup. The Sheffield-based side progressed to the final, but ultimately lost to Arsenal.
When Sheffield Utd and Burnley next met in the FA Cup, in 1962, it was the latter that emerged victorious in this quarter-final tie. The Clarets went on to reach the final, but were soundly beaten by Tottenham Hotspur.
In 1976, Sheffield Utd and Burnley were both relegated from the First Division. Just four years later, both teams found themselves playing in the Third Division.
They met in the FA Cup, yet again, in 1993. Sheffield Utd advanced to the semi-finals but crashed out to local rivals Sheffield Wednesday.
There are a handful of well-known players who have been involved with both these clubs:
• Gary Cahill made his senior debut at Burnley in 2004, whilst on loan from Aston Villa. The central defender later joined Sheffield Utd on loan, before going on to earn 61 caps for England and become a UEFA Champions League winner with Chelsea.
• Phil Bardsley moved to Burnley, on loan from Manchester United, in 2006 before a loan spell at Sheffield Utd the following year. The Scotland international later spent five years at Turf Moor, towards the end of his playing career.
• Sam Vokes joined both these teams, on loan from Wolves, during the 2011/12 season. The Wales striker then signed for Burnley on a permanent basis.
• In 2023, Norway midfielder Sander Berge moved directly between these clubs, from Sheffield Utd to Burnley for a transfer fee in the region of £12m.
Sheffield United vs Burnley Head-to-Head
To date, these teams have contested more than 125 meetings with the majority of these played prior to the reformatting of the Football League in 1992.
They faced one another in the 2009 Championship play-off final; Burnley won at Wembley, 1-0, to earn promotion to the Premier League. In doing so, the Clarets achieved top-flight status for the first time since 1976.
The 2019/20 Premier League campaign saw Sheffield Utd and Burnley meet in a top-flight encounter for the first time after 43 years. In this particular fixture, John Lundstram scored twice in a 3-0 victory for the home side.
Both these teams were promoted to the Premier League for the 2023/24 season. In the previous Championship campaign, this fixture produced a seven-goal thriller which ended 5-2 in favour of the Blades.
