Burnley vs Wolverhampton Wanderers History

This match-up features not one but two founder members of the Football League more than a century ago. Over the years, Burnley and Wolves have met in each of the top four tiers of the Football League, an extremely unique characteristic of this fixture.

Both teams were part of the second tier in the early 21st century and, more recently, in the 2015-16 EFL Championship. In 1987 they played their football in League Four.

Their first meeting in the Premier League came in 2009 after both clubs had earned promotion from the Championship, and it was the first time since 1976 they had met in the top flight. Wolves won 2-0 at home and would also go on to win the return fixture, 2-1, at Turf Moor.

•In 2010, Scotland striker Steven Fletcher traded claret and blue for orange and black in a move worth £8m which, at the time, was a club record fee for Wolves.

Burnley vs Wolverhampton Wanderers Head-to-Head

Their first five meetings all went the way of Wolves with an aggregate score of 22 goals to four. Burnley finally earned its maiden victory over this opposition, a 4-2 win in 1890.

When these teams met at Molineux Stadium in 2021, Burnley blew the home side away with a compelling 4-0 win. Chris Wood struck a first-half hat-trick for the Clarets to claim their biggest away win in the English top flight since 1965.

Matej Vydra scored the only goal in this fixture in April 2022, though ultimately the 1-0 victory was not enough to stave off relegation to the Championship for Burnley.

Until the end of the 2022/23 season, the teams' only clash in the FA Cup came in 1970 as Burnley progressed to the Fourth Round with a 3-0 win.
