Burnley vs Manchester City History

1897 was the year of the first on-field meeting between these clubs, in the old Second Division. Just two years later did Burnley and Manchester City meet in the top flight for the first time.

These teams faced off in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup in 1933. Man City escaped Turf Moor with a narrow 1-0 victory before progressing to the final. They lost out to Everton, 3-0, but returned to Wembley the following year and lifted the Cup for a second time after beating Portsmouth.

Burnley and Man City have shared more than 110 meetings, with a mixed bag of results for much of the 20th century. In recent years, however, contests between the Clarets and the Citizens have mostly gone in favour of the latter.

Despite being a founder member of the Football League in 1888, Burnley don’t have much to show for it in terms of achievements and trophies. Contrary, Man City have been showered in silverware as of late, particularly during Pep Guardiola’s tenure as manager at the Etihad Stadium.

The Sky Blues have won no fewer than five Premier League titles since the Spaniard was appointed in 2016. The club won the FA Cup for a seventh time in 2023, together with maiden European honours.

On top of their many battles, there is also a fair share of individuals who have represented both these clubs:

• Kieran Trippier was aged nine when he joined the youth system at Man City. Despite climbing the ranks, he never went on to play for the club’s senior team. Trippier moved on loan to Burnley in 2011, before completing a permanent switch to Turf Moor one year later.

• Ben Mee also emerged through the Manchester City Academy but, just like Trippier, he struggled to break into the first-team. In 2012, the central defender signed for Burnley on a long-term deal and he went on to amass more than 375 appearances across a decade-long spell with the Clarets.

• Joe Hart was 19 years-old when he was signed by Man City. The 75-cap England goalkeeper featured 348 times for the Citizens before he was sold to Burnley in 2018.

• In 2023, Burnley acquired goalkeeper James Trafford from Man City, for a fee worth up to £19m.

• Former Belgium international Vincent Kompany served as captain of Manchester City for eight years until 2019, and he was appointed Burnley manager in 2022.

Burnley vs Manchester City Head-to-Head

The 2009/10 Premier League campaign saw these teams meet in the English top flight for the first time since 1976. Man City won this fixture resoundingly, by six goals to one; Emmanuel Adebayor, Carlos Tevez and Vincent Kompany were all on the scoresheet at Turf Moor.

In 2014/15, Burnley registered a league win over the Citizens for the first time in more than 40 years.

More recently, these teams met in the FA Cup in 2023. Man City comfortably won this quarter-final tie, 6-0, on their way to clinching the Cup for a seventh time and subsequently completed a treble by winning the UEFA Champions League.
