The first-ever meeting between these teams came in 1961, in the FA Cup; Burnley won this Third Round tie by a single goal to nil.
Four years later, Burnley and Bournemouth reconvened in the same competition and, once again, in the Third Round. The match was drawn, 1-1, before Burnley won the replay by a remarkable seven goals to zero. The Clarets progressed but later crashed out to Manchester United in the Fifth Round.
Come the end of the 2022/23 season, Bournemouth had yet to lift a major trophy for the first time. Burnley, meanwhile, possess more history as one of the 12 founder members of the Football League in the late 20th century. The Clarets won the FA Cup in 1914 and later the First Division in 1921 and 1960.
A handful of players have donned the badges of both these clubs, namely:
•Junior Stanislas joined Bournemouth on a free transfer from Burnley in 2014. The winger remained at Dean Court (Vitality Stadium) for the best part of a decade, amassing more than 175 appearances in Bournemouth colours.
•Former England international Danny Ings was a Burnley player for four years until 2015, having previously emerged from the Bournemouth junior teams.
•Republic of Ireland winger Robbie Brady switched to Bournemouth in 2021, after a four-year stay with Burnley.
In 2016, these clubs met in the top flight of English football for the first time. This fixture produced a five-goal thriller at Turf Moor, with the hosts earning a 3-2 victory over the Cherries.
In 2018/19, the home team won this fixture as Ashley Barnes netted twice in a 4-0 triumph. Aaron Lennon was also amongst the goals.
The teams met in this fixture in February 2020, shortly before the Covid-19 pandemic forced the football season (and many other facets of life) to go on pause indefinitely. Dwight McNeil rounded off the scoring in a 3-0 victory for Burnley.
