The first-ever clash between these two clubs came in the 1894/95 season of the old First Division. Burnley and Liverpool played out a 3-3 draw at Turf Moor, before the Clarets earned a 3-0 victory at Anfield later in the campaign. It wasn’t until 1899 that Liverpool beat Burnley for the first time.

Of their 110+ meetings to date, most have been in the top division of the English Football League with a chunk coming in the FA Cup.

These teams contested the FA Cup final in 1914, which Burnley won (1-0) to lift the Cup for the first time. In 1947, they faced off in the semi-finals of the same competition as Burnley edged Liverpool in the replay to reach the final at Wembley, where they narrowly lost to Charlton Athletic.

Liverpool have, by far, been the more successful of these clubs over the years. The Merseyside outfit won a 19th league title in 2020, after having captured Europe’s top prize for a sixth time the previous year.

• Peter Crouch spent three years at Liverpool until 2008, scoring 42 goals for the Reds. In 2019, the former England striker joined Burnley for a brief spell before announcing his retirement from professional football later that year.
