Liverpool vs Chelsea is a Premier League fixture that has only intensified as each season takes place, with the two rivals appearing to dislike each other even more as they put in some of the most competitive battles on the football pitch when they play against each other.
Perhaps the biggest club in the English game, Liverpool have a history that not many other teams in the world can match. The Merseyside outfit has known how to win titles for the majority of their existence, which makes them a side many flock to watch. Add the iconic 54,074 seater Anfield to the mix, it is clear Liverpool are one of the top teams.
Chelsea have started to become one of English football’s latest powerhouses, though, as Roman Abramovich has turned them into a force to be reckoned with after ploughing a significant amount of finance into the club. The Blues are Champions League winners, as well as having won every honour in England multiple times, including no fewer than five top-flight titles in their history.
When the two sides take to the field at Anfield, a really competitive and entertaining spectacle is produced, although Liverpool could perhaps say they have had some meetings they would rather forget that involves the Blues.
Steven Gerrard’s slip against Chelsea in 2014 effectively ended their title hopes with just two games to go for that year as Demba Ba went clean through on goal and slotted past a helpless Simon Mignolet. The 2-0 defeat ultimately proved costly and would have only intensified the rivalry between the two sides that intensified during the managerial tenures of Jose Mourinho and Rafa Benitez; a man who would subsequently join the Londoners a little further down the line in a temporary role.
However, Liverpool has also had some really good moments at Anfield against their title rivals as well, with results such as the 2-0 win in 2019 and the 4-1 demolition job in 2012 all memorable victories for the Reds.
Of course, there have been a number of star men that have featured for both sides in contests between the two, with the likes of Sadio Mane, Steven Gerrard and Virgil van Dijk all featuring, whereas Chelsea has had the likes of Didier Drogba, Diego Costa and Eden Hazard all perform as well. Notwithstanding, the two clubs have had players feature for both sides, with Mohamed Salah and Fernando Torres having played for both teams in their careers.
Because of the increased rivalry over time, Liverpool versus Chelsea is one of the biggest glamour ties of the Premier League campaign each year as both sides look to battle it out for the Premier League title. Experiencing Anfield in a match with a vast number of household names on the pitch is a must and there arguably is no better game to experience it than this one.
