Liverpool vs Chelsea History

These teams first met in 1907 as Chelsea earned an impressive 4-1 win at Liverpool. Today both of them sit among England's most successful football clubs.

More than three-quarters of their meetings have been in the top flight of English football, though they have also clashed many times in the FA Cup, EFL Cup and the UEFA Champions League.

In fact, some of the most memorable moments involving Liverpool and Chelsea have come in European competition rather than domestic. They crossed paths in the 2004/05 Champions League semi-finals, at which time Liverpool and Chelsea were evenly-matched with managers Rafael Benítez and José Mourinho each wrapping up their first seasons in their respective jobs.

Following a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge, Luis Garcia's 'ghost goal' proved the difference as Liverpool snatched a 1-0 aggregate win to advance to the Champions League final. The Reds went on to overturn a 3-0 half-time deficit to beat AC Milan on penalties.

Liverpool and Chelsea would meet again in Europe's premier club competition in three consecutive seasons from 2006/07 to 2008/09, of which the third and final produced bizarre scenes over two legs.

The Blues left Anfield with a precious win and three away goals, only for Liverpool to net four at Stamford Bridge. Both teams scored twice after the 75th minute, culminating in a 4-4 draw in London and a 7-5 win on aggregate for Chelsea.

On top of the storied history between Liverpool and Chelsea, a host of elite players have represented both these clubs over the years.

• Fernando Torres switched from Liverpool to Chelsea in January 2011 for a cost of £50m, a British record transfer fee at the time. 'El Niño' didn't exactly live up to expectations at Stamford Bridge, though the Spain striker did find the back of the net versus FC Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals, before Chelsea beat Bayern Munich on penalties at the Allianz Arena.
• Other players who have moved directly been the clubs include former England internationals Joe Cole and Daniel Sturridge. Cole made 281 appearances for the Blues, winning three FA Cup and three Premier League titles before moving to Merseyside on a free transfer in 2010. Sturridge, meanwhile, was a more prominent figure during his time with the Reds following a £12m move from Chelsea in early 2013.

There are also a number of players who have played for both these clubs despite not moving directly from one to the other, among them:

• Mohamed Salah made just 19 appearances for Chelsea before signing for Italian outfit AS Roma in 2016. 12 months later Liverpool paid in the region of £40m for the Egypt international, who has gone on to score more than 200 goals for the Reds.
• Raheem Sterling emerged from the Liverpool Academy before completing a £49m transfer to Manchester City in 2015. The England forward became a four-time Premier League winner before signing as a Chelsea player in 2022.
• Portugal midfielder Raul Meireles swapped red for blue in 2011, a year after Israel winger Yossi Benayoun had done likewise.

To date, the Reds and the Blues have shared a pitch more than 190 times.

These teams put on a classic in this fixture towards the end of the 2013/14 Premier League campaign. Chelsea travelled to Anfield with the objective of derailing the hosts' title charge under Brendan Rodgers.

With Manchester City in hot pursuit, Liverpool could ill afford any slip-ups but this quickly turned into an agonising and haunting match for the home side. Inspirational captain Steven Gerrard slipped near the halfway, allowing Demba Ba to put Chelsea in front shortly before half-time.

Mourinho's elite game management was put to the test but the Blues managed to hold on and they even grabbed another goal late on, against the run of play, to cement 3 points and leave Liverpool's title aspirations hanging by a thread.

More recently, Liverpool and Chelsea played out seven consecutive draws from 2021-23. On top of five Premier League stalemates, the teams also contested the Carabao Cup final and FA Cup final, both ending goalless with Liverpool twice victorious on penalties.
