History of Portman Road

Portman Road has been the home of Ipswich Town Football Club since 1884, making it one of the oldest active stadiums in English football.

Portman Road had a 29,673 capacity at the end of the 2023/24 season but needed additional seats in compliance with Premier League regulations, taking the renewed capacity beyond 30,250.

In what was the club's first Premier League fixture for 22 years, Portman Road recorded an attendance of 30,014 for the season-opener against Liverpool in August 2024.

Portman Road Facilities

The Sir Bobby Robson Stand, formerly the North Stand, was completely rebuilt in 2001 and renamed in 2009. With around 7,500 seats, this is where the loudest Ipswich Town fans are usually seated.

Behind the opposite goal is the Sir Alf Ramsey Stand, renamed in 2012 in honour of the prominent World Cup-winning ex-manager of the club. This two-tier stand can accommodate approximately 7,000 people. The players' tunnel is located between the Sir Alf Ramsey Stand and the West Stand.

The West Stand is a three-tiered structure containing the Directors' Box as well as the press area. Following promotion to the Premier League in 2024, new executive boxes were added to the middle tier of the West Stand. Former names of this section include the 'Pioneer Stand', the 'Britannia Stand', the 'East of England Co-operative Stand', and most recently the 'Magnus Group West Stand'.

The Cobbold Stand, originally called the Portman Stand, was constructed in 1971. This is where away fans are seated for Ipswich Town games, with an allocation close to 3,000.

Outside the stadium are three statues, honouring former managers Sir Alf Ramsey & Sir Bobby Robson, as well as Kevin Beattie who is considered to be one of the greatest players in the club's history.
