This ground was built in 1909 and first opened in February 1910, having been designed by Scottish architect Archibald Leitch. Construction of Old Trafford cost a grand total of £90,000, which would have been worth an estimated £13 million in 2024.
John Henry Davies, chairman of Manchester United at the time, is best known for saving the club from bankruptcy in the early 20th century. Davies had been searching for a site to build a new stadium before settling on a piece of land adjacent to the Bridgewater Canal in Greater Manchester.
Old Trafford has undergone a number of major renovations, including after WWII due to damage incurred during the War. There were more redevelopments in the mid-1990s and again in 2006. The latter saw the stadium capacity expanded to 74,310, more than any other club stadium in the United Kingdom.
The highest average attendance at Old Trafford over a league season is 75,826, recorded during the 2006/07 campaign.
The Stretford End is undoubtedly the most popular stand at Old Trafford, standing behind the goals on the west side of the stadium. This is where you will find the most vocal and passionate Man United supporters, with many season ticket holders seated here. The two-tiered Stretford End can accommodate around 14,000 people.
Directly opposite is the East Stand, which also has two tiers. Away fans are primarily seated in the upper tier of the East Stand, and the disabled seating area is also found in this part of the stadium.
The North Stand – renamed the 'Sir Alex Ferguson Stand' in 2011 – is the largest stand at Old Trafford with an estimated 26,000 seats. The three-tiered structure includes the North West and North East Quadrants and also houses executive boxes, hospitality suites as well as other significant amenities such as the Red Café and the club museum.
The opposite facing South Stand was renamed the 'Sir Bobby Charlton Stand' in 2016. This stand contains the only remaining part of the original 1910 stadium infrastructure, and features the old players' tunnel which was renamed the 'Munich Tunnel' in 2008. There are close to 9,500 seats in the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand, excluding 300 seats in the Directors' Box and press area.
There are also a number of statues found in the vicinity Old Trafford, honouring important figures in the club's history. A sculpture of Sir Matt Busby was erected in 1993, outside the East Stand near to the main entrance of the stadium.
In close proximity is another statue, depicting three legendary players – George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton – collectively known as the 'United Trinity'. Together the trio scored 665 goals for MUFC, and were pivotal to the team's ascension to European glory in 1968. The statue was installed in May 2008, exactly 40 years to the day after Manchester United first won the European Cup.
A 9-foot statue of Sir Alex Ferguson was unveiled outside the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand in November 2012, commemorating the club's longest-serving manager.
The most recent sculpture to be erected at Old Trafford was that of Jimmy Murphy. The Welshman was a coach and assistant manager to Busby, and he played a particularly vital role in the club's recovery following the fatal 1958 Munich air disaster. Unveiled in May 2023, the statue is located outside the Stretford End.
