The Old Trafford Cricket Ground first opened in 1857 and initially served as the home of Manchester Cricket Club before becoming the home of Lancashire County Cricket Club in 1865. The T20 team is known as the Lancashire Lightning, since the competition was established in 2003.
In 1884, Old Trafford hosted the first Ashes Test played in England and thus became the second English ground to stage Test cricket, after The Oval. This venue holds the record for hosting the most Cricket World Cup matches (17).
Old Trafford lost its Test match status in 2009, prompting Lancashire CCC to initiate plans for extensive redevelopment to the ground with the primary aims of modernizing the facilities and an increase in capacity. Major redevelopment work saw the installation of permanent floodlights a new video screen, as well as new stands and improved player & media facilities.
The Old Trafford Cricket Ground reopened in 2012, boasting a facelift and refurbished amenities. The ground's name was changed to Emirates Old Trafford in 2013, in line with a sponsorship deal with the Emirates airline.
The Pavilion has both structural and historical significance at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground. Originally built in 1895, the three-tiered Victorian structure represented a classic example of cricket ground architecture from that era. Prior to redevelopment, the Pavilion sat parallel to the pitches as opposed to behind one of the two wickets.
West of the Pavilion is The Point, which opened in 2010. This distinctive red structure is a £12m stand overlooking the pitch, and one of the largest multi-purpose conference facilities in North West England.
Prior to the new Media Centre which opened in September 2012, there were two media stands at opposite ends of the ground.
The new Media and Players Centre is at the Brian Statham End (southern End). The opposite facing End, the northern End, was named in honour of England bowler James Anderson in 2017.
Aside from cricket matches, there are also a number of world-famous musicians who have performed at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground, which can hold a 50,000 capacity for concerts.
Oasis were live in front of a sold-out crowd at Old Trafford in 2002, while the likes of Radiohead, Coldplay and Green Day have also attracted the masses to the Lancashire Cricket Club.
Rihanna & Beyoncé both performed at Emirates Old Trafford in 2016, and the venue also provided the backdrop for One Love Manchester in June 2017, which featured a host of high-profile artists such as Ariana Grande, Robbie Williams, Noel Gallagher, and Justin Bieber.
