The FIA Formula 1 World Championship is watched by an audience measuring in the hundreds of millions, and for every race weekend in the season, you can guarantee hundreds of thousands of fans will be packed into grandstand seats and hospitality areas, watching on as courageous drivers race by at speeds well in excess of 200 mph.
Though Formula 1 racing was a dream first realised in 1946, the first World Championship occurred in 1950. Iconic drivers like Juan Manuel Fangio, Jack Brabham, and Graham Hill won the title repeatedly, and it would be fair to say that when Bernie Ecclestone came to manage the commercial rights of the sport in the 1970s, Formula 1 went through something of a renaissance.
In the 70s, the famous rivalry between Austrian driver Niki Lauda and British hero James Hunt was legendary, even being fashioned into a successful Hollywood movie starring Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth.
Danger has always been part and parcel of Formula 1; indeed, it's one of the reasons that Grandstand tickets sell out all around the world, and the sad and tragic death of Brazilian driver Ayrton Senna in 1994 certainly cast a shadow over the sport.
From 1994 to 2004, one man reigned supreme, Michael Schumacher, the German winning a total of seven World titles, including wins for both Benetton and Ferrari.
Fernando Alonso wrestled supremacy from Schumacher by winning the title in 2005 and 2006. British driver Lewis Hamilton then dominated the sport, becoming the joint most successful driver of all time, alongside Schumacher on seven titles. In 2021, Max Verstappen ended Hamilton's supremacy, going on to win four back-to-back Championships at Red Bull.
The Formula 1 World Championship for 2025 includes 24 races taking place in countries around the world. There will be three races in the United States and two races in Italy.
The season runs from March to December, and tickets for all races go on sale many months in advance.
The points scoring for races has changed quite a bit over the years but currently works like this.
