This competition was founded in 1966 and named after Joan Gamper, founder and later president of FC Barcelona. The second edition of the tournament saw Atletico Madrid take part together with Boca Juniors & Bayern Munich.
The Joan Gamper Trophy usually takes place at the Camp Nou, however the 2023 & 2024 editions were held at the Olympic Stadium (Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys) while the Camp Nou underwent renovations.
Since reverting to a two-team competition in 1997, the Joan Gamper Trophy has hosted some of Europe's leading clubs. Bundesliga outfit Bayern Munich were the visiting team in 2006, while a number of Serie A teams (including AC Milan, Juventus, Napoli & Roma) have also featured in this annual event.
In addition, South American teams have been invited to particiapte in the Joan Gamper Trophy, such as Boca Juniors from Argentina as well as Brazilian club Chapecoense.
FC Barcelona vs Inter Milan was the fixture in 2007, with an in-house attendance of 98,559. On this occasion Ronaldinho opened the scoring in a rampant 5-0 victory for Barca.
In 2023 Barcelona faced Premier League side Tottenham, ending 4-2 in favour of the Catalan giants. The following year La Blaugrana lost the Joan Gamper trophy for the first time since 2012 as they suffered a 3-0 defeat to AS Monaco.
There have been a number of world-class talents on display in the Joan Gamper Trophy, both on the pitch as well as the touchline. Johan Cruyff, for example, was a Barcelona player in the 1970s before going on to manage the first-team from 1988-1996. Pep Guardiola is another who has been both a player and manager of FC Barcelona.
A host of Barca icons have featured in this game, including the likes of Carles Puyol, Xavi, Andres Iniesta. In more recent times young talents such as Lamine Yamal & Pedri have represented Barcelona in this match, together with international talents Frenkie de Jong & Robert Lewandowski.
Opposing players have included Clarence Seedorf & Andrea Pirlo with AC Milan in 2010, as well as Bukayo Saka & Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for Arsenal in 2019.
