Columbus Crew History

The club was founded in June 1994, making it one of the oldest competitors in Major League Soccer. Columbus Crew took part in the inaugural edition of MLS in 1996, finishing 8th out of 10 teams.

In 2004 Columbus Crew finished top of the MLS overall standings for the first time, but subsequently crashed out of the conference semi-finals.

After three years of failing to qualify for the play-offs, the Crew made a statement in 2008 by topping the overall standings and going on to clinch a maiden MLS Cup, beating New York Red Bulls in the final. Columbus Crew returned to the MLS Cup final in 2015, though ultimately lost to Portland Timbers.

In 2020 the Crew ended 3rd in the Eastern Conference before overcoming three play-off matches to book a spot in the MLS Cup final. The Black and Gold sealed a 3-0 victory over Seattle Sounders to lift this trophy for a second time.

Columbus Crew claimed 3rd place in the 2023 MLS Eastern Conference. Wilfried Nancy's team then defeated Atlanta United, Orlando City as well as local rivals FC Cincinnati to reach the MLS Cup final for the fourth time. The Crew edged Los Angeles FC, 2-1, at Lower.com Field, becoming three-time winners of this title.

Columbus Crew Best Players

• Chad Marshall made more than 270 appearances for the Crew, making him the most-capped player for the club at the time of his retirement in 2013.
• Former USA striker Brian McBride scored 77 goals in 195 matches for Columbus Crew. He was also the first overall pick of the MLS Inaugural Player Draft in 1996. Only McBride has netted more times for the Crew than Jeff Cunningham did. Cunningham scored 68 goals in 229 outings with the Black and Gold.
• Federico Higuaín, brother of former Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuaín, played 210 games for Columbus Crew.
• Goalkeeper Zack Steffen made his name at the Crew and earned a first cap for the USMNT prior to joining Manchester City in the English Premier League.
• Colombia striker Cucho Hernández signed for Columbus Crew in the summer of 2022 and became an instant hit, scoring 24 goals in the following season. He was joined in attack by Uruguay forward Diego Rossi, who had previously played for LAFC and Turkish side Fenerbahce.

Columbus Crew Rivalries

The Crew's local rivals are FC Cincinnati, though the latter only began playing MLS in 2019. This rivalry is referred to as the 'Hell is Real Derby', based on a billboard along I-71 between Columbus and Cincinnati.

Columbus Crew also share a rivalry with Chicago Fire, although the teams are separated by a six-hour drive.

The home ground of Columbus Crew is Lower.com Field. This stadium in Columbus, Ohio opened in 2021 with an estimated capacity 20,000 people.

From 1999-2021 the Crew's home games were played at Columbus Crew Stadium, which also held a capacity around 20,000. Prior to that, the 102,000-seater Ohio Stadium hosted the Crew's home matches.
