The Utah Jazz started life as the New Orleans Jazz in 1974 and joined the NBA as part of their latest expansion, and they spent five seasons in this guise, all of which saw the team secure losing records before they relocated to Salt Lake City to become the Utah Jazz.
During their time in New Orleans, the Jazz experienced a number of issues in relation to their home arenas, and by the fifth season in Utah, they had finally secured their first-ever playoff berth when they won the Midwest Division in 1983-84 and finished second in the Western Conference before losing to the Phoenix Suns in the Conference semifinals.
The team saw steady progress through the mid-80s and throughout the 90s, and star players like Karl Malone and John Stockton were, and still are, Utah Jazz legends.
The team made it to the playoffs for a stunning 20 seasons in a row, with spells under head coach Frank Layden and John Sloan proving most effective.
Their nadir was undoubtedly during the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons when they made it all the way to back-to-back NBA Finals, having won the Western Conference on both occasions, but in both Championship clashes, they lost out to a dominant Chicago Bulls side led by Michael Jordan.
