UEFA Nations League Third-Place Play-Off Info

This tournament is split up into four divisions: League A, League B, League C, and League D. Only teams in League A are eligible to qualify for the UEFA Nations League finals.

League A comprises of four groups of four nations each, with every team playing six group matches – home and away against all fellow group members. The four group winners subsequently advance to the Nations League semi-finals.

One of the final four competing nations will be selected to host the finals. The winning semifinalists will, of course, meet in the UEFA Nations League final while the losing semifinalists will contest the third-place play-off.

UEFA Nations League Third-Place Play-Off History

The maiden edition of this tournament saw England beat Switzerland (on penalties) in the third-place play-off. The Three Lions had been knocked out by the Netherlands in the semi-finals, while the Swiss on the receiving end of a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick, as Portugal went on to win the inaugural Nations League title.

The 2020/21 Nations League finals saw host nation Italy defeat Belgium in the bronze medal match, after these teams lost to Spain and eventual winners France, respectively, in the semi-finals. Nicolò Barella and Domenico Berardi scored in a 2-1 win for the Azzurri at Juventus Stadium.

Italy once again finished third in the 2022/23 Nations League, overcoming the Netherlands, following another semi-final loss to Spain. Federico Chiesa netted the decisive goal in a 3-2 victory for the Italians.
