UEFA Europa League Knockout Play-Offs Format

The UEFA Europa League Knockout Play-Offs take place following the completion of the Europa League group stage and see the relevant teams fight it out, over two legs, to get to the Round of 16.

Up to 2024/25, this would have seen the right runners-up from the group stage fight out with sides that finished in third place in their respective UEFA Champions League group stage, but this format has now been adjusted.

An extended league phase has replaced the eight smaller groups, and the 36 teams that take part will play eight games and the teams who finish in the first eight places advance directly to the Round of 16, which those who finish between 9th and 24th, qualify for the Knockout Round play offs.

In 2024/2025, some major European teams were involved in the Europa League Knockout Round play offs. Ajax edged past Union SG, Bodo/Glimt dumped out FC Twente, Roma beat FC Porto and Fenerbahce scored 5 over two legs against Anderlecht.

Previous UEFA Europa League Knockout Round Play-Offs

The 2021/22 season was the first UEFA Europa League tournament to include knockout round playoffs, whereas previously, there had been a Round of 32.

Manchester United became Europa League winners when they defeated Ajax in the final, Jose Mourinho guiding the Red Devils to success.

Atalanta won the Europa League 2024, the Italian side's first European trophy, when they defeated Bayer Leverkusen at the Dublin Arena, having taken care of Liverpool in the quarter-finals and Marseille in the semi finals.
