Beşiktaş JK History

The club was founded in 1903, making it the oldest (active) football club in Istanbul.

The Turkish National League was only formed in 1959, and it was around this time Besiktas enjoyed its first golden period. Kara Kartallar (The Black Eagles) claimed their first league title in 1957 and just 10 years later that tally had grown to five.

Besiktas reached the European Cup quarter-finals in 1986/87, bowing out to Dynamo Kyiv. The early-to-mid 1990s saw Besiktas dominate Turkish football, claiming four league titles in six years. Since then, the Istanbul outfit has added no fewer than five Süper Lig championships.

BJK have competed sporadically in the modern Champions League era, though progressing to the knockout rounds has been an elusive task for the Turkish side. Besiktas advanced to the Round of 16 in the 2017/18 season but crashed out to Bayern Munich, 8-1 on aggregate. The previous season Kara Kartallar reached the Europa League quarter-finals, but exited the tournament via penalties.

In 2021 Besiktas became Turkish champions for the 16th time, though they remain some way behind their main rivals. Former Netherlands international Giovanni van Bronckhorst was appointed head coach of Besiktas ahead of the 2024/25 season, replacing Fernando Santos in the role.

Kara Kartallar play their home matches at Tüpraş Stadyumu, also known as Beşiktaş Stadyumu and formerly Vodafone Arena and then Vodafone Park.

Tüpraş Stadyumu has a 42,590 capacity, making it the third-largest club stadium in Turkey. Opened in 2016, the venue was built on the site of the club's former home, İnönü Stadyumu, and it has been the home of Besiktas JK ever since.
