The Smashing Pumpkins History

The Smashing Pumpkins were formed in the late 1980s, and they released their first single in 1990, with I Am One, selling out and leading to their signing with Caroline Records. Formed in Chicago, the band teamed up with legendary producer Butch Vig on their debut album's release, Gish, and was a moderate success.

As the grunge scene started to bubble up, with the likes of Nirvana and Pearl Jam getting mainstream recognition, interest in The Smashing Pumpkins increased. Now signed to Virgin, Billy Corgan and his bandmates produced their second studio album, Siamese Dream, and it became a genre-defining classic that holds up to this day.

Having gone quadruple platinum, Siamese Dream was always going to be a hard act to follow, but the new music released by The Smashing Pumpkins proved that for the band, selling albums by the million was nothing out of the ordinary.

The album sold over four million copies in the US alone and is often cited as the best alternative rock album of all time. Hit singles from the album included Today, Cherub Rock and Disarm. The follow-up album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness proved to be another huge seller and was backed up by a massively successful tour.

The album spawned big singles like 1979, Zero and Tonight, Tonight.

It sold over five million copies in the US and earned the band seven Grammy nominations. Adore followed in 1998, and Machina/The Machines of God was released in 2000, both selling very well and cementing their place among the biggest bands in the world.

There then followed something of a hiatus for the band, with frontman Billy Corgan having something of a fractious relationship with his fellow band members.

In 2000 the band broke up, and members went on to work on new projects, including Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlain's Zwan. The band returned in 2005, albeit without key members James Iha (who would go on to return in 2018) and D'arcy Wretzky.

2023 saw The Smashing Pumpkins release their twelfth studio album, Atum: A Rock Opera Presented in Three Acts. Though the concept album has not performed in the same vein as some of the band's biggest works, it was well-received by fans and critics, and it has led to the band getting back out on the road.

The band has sold tens of millions of albums worldwide and has received a myriad of awards. These include an American Music Award, two Grammy Awards and seven MTV VMAs.
