The club was founded in 1967, originally called AZ '67, and would compete in the Dutch Eredivisie for the first time in the 1968/69 season. AZ won the KNVB Beker (Dutch Cup) in 1978 with a 1-0 win against Ajax, marking the club's maiden major trophy.

Three years later AZ became Eredivisie champions with just a single defeat in 34 league matches.
