Though they are one of the newest teams in the NBA, the Memphis Grizzlies have made some progress over the years since they joined the league in 1995.
Founded in 1995 as the Vancouver Grizzlies, the team was part of the expansion into Canada, along with the Toronto Raptors.
The team spent six years in the league, all of which ended with losing records before they relocated ahead of the 2001-2002 season.
They became the Memphis Grizzlies and, within three seasons, had booked their first-ever run to the playoffs when they finished the 2003-04 season with a 50-32 record before losing to the San Antonio Spurs in four games in the first round of the playoffs.
The team fought their way to the playoffs in the next two campaigns before also losing in four games to both the Phoenix Suns and the Dallas Mavericks. A key player during this period was Spanish star Pau Gasol, who then left to join the Los Angeles Lakers.
Three disastrous seasons between 2006-07 and 2008-09 saw the team win 22,22, and 24 games, respectively, with a number of coaches failing to impress. Tony Barone didn't last long, likewise Marc Iavaroni.
Indeed, former Philadelphia 76ers and Orlando Magic head coach Johnny Davis was an interim coach in a 2008-09 season that saw the team finally secure Hollins as a vast improvement.
Under Lionel Hollins and Dave Joerger, the team secured a run of seven successive playoff finishes, with Zach Randolph impressive. Unfortunately, the team has struggled to make a real impact in the post-season.
In those seven seasons, they lost early in the playoffs to the San Antonio Spurs on three occasions, the Oklahoma City Thunder twice, and the Los Angeles Clippers.
In 2014-15 they completed a 55-27 regular season record before dumping out the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round of the playoffs before losing to the Golden State Warriors.
Under Taylor Jenkins, things have picked up, and the Grizzlies finished first in the Southwest in 2021-22, the first time they've achieved that fear ever, chiefly due to the efforts of top player Ja Morant.
The Southwest Division pits the Memphis Grizzlies against the New Orleans Pelicans, the Dallas Mavericks, the San Antonio Spurs, and the Houston Rockets.
The Memphis Grizzlies play at the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tennessee, where they moved in 2004, having previously been situated in the Pyramid Arena.
The venue has a capacity of 17,794 for basketball games.
