These teams first met back in 1893, when Manchester City were still known as Ardwick. Their initial meetings came in the Second Division and only in the 1899/00 season did Liverpool and Manchester City share a pitch in the top flight.

There are many high-profile players, past & present, who have worn the colours of both these clubs:

• Matt Busby is perhaps best known for his time as Manchester United manager, though during his playing days the Scotsman represented both Liverpool & Man City.

• Robbie Fowler made 369 appearances for Liverpool's senior team, having developed through the club's youth academy. The striker left Anfield in 2001, signing for Leeds United, and joined Man City two years later.
