Liverpool vs Brighton History

The first-ever meeting between these teams came in the 1908 FA Cup, as Liverpool ran out 3-0 winners in this Second Round tie. 50 years passed by before the sides contested a league fixture for the first time in the 1958/59 season. It came in the Second Division following Liverpool's relegation in 1954.

The Reds returned to the First Division in the early 60s and these teams finally met in the top flight in 1979 after Brighton reached the First Division for the very first time.

While Liverpool are one of England's most decorated football clubs, Brighton had yet to win a first major trophy by the end of 2023. The Seagulls did however qualify for European football for the first time as Roberto De Zerbi guided them to Europa League football.

The Reds won a maiden Premier League title in 2020, one year after also lifting the UEFA Champions League under the tutelage of Jürgen Klopp.

A number of players have represented both Liverpool and Brighton:

• Former Republic of Ireland defender Mark Lawrenson played 356 times for Liverpool and won five league titles during his time at Anfield during the 1980s. He had moved directly from Brighton, for a club record fee of £900k, bringing an end to his four-year stay on the south coast.

• James Milner spent eight years as a Liverpool player, amassing more than 330 appearances for the Reds. The 61-cap England international completed a free transfer to Brighton in 2023, three years after countryman Adam Lallana had done likewise.

• Argentina midfielder Alexis Mac Allister joined Liverpool from Brighton in the summer of 2023, for an initial transfer fee of £35m.

Liverpool vs Brighton Head-to-Head

Liverpool haven't shared a pitch with Brighton many times, relative to the amount of clashes against other teams such as Everton and Manchester United. The Reds and the Seagulls met for only the 35th time in 2022.

The first Premier League meeting between Liverpool and Brighton came about in the 2017/18 season, as the Seagulls returned to the top flight after more than 35 years away. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring in a comfortable 4-0 win for the home side on the final day of the league campaign.

In February 2021, Brighton recorded only their second league victory at Anfield. Steven Alzate netted the only goal of the game in a historic triumph for the visitors.

This fixture produced a six-goal thriller in the 2022/23 season, just two weeks after Roberto De Zerbi's appointment at The AMEX Stadium. Brighton were two goals to the good inside the opening 20 minutes, courtesy of Leandro Trossard's double. Roberto Firmino with two goals of his own before Liverpool took the lead through an Adam Webster own goal. Trossard completed his hat-trick in the final minutes as the spoils were shared at Anfield.
