Brighton vs Everton History

These teams met for the first time in the 1913 FA Cup. At the time, Everton were a dominant force in English football though this Second Round tie required a replay, which the Toffees won by a single goal to nil at Goodison Park.

After meeting again in the 1924 FA Cup, Brighton and Everton did not share a pitch again for 55 years until the former achieved promotion to the old First Division. In that time, the Toffees won five league titles and the FA Cup twice.

Brighton were relegated to the Second Division in 1983 and they would not face Everton again for more than three decades until 2017.

A few notable players have represented both these clubs over the years:

• Shane Duffy emerged from the Everton Academy before leaving Merseyside for Blackburn Rovers in 2014. The Northern Ireland defender later signed for the Seagulls and remained on their books for seven years until 2023.

• In 2023, Everton bought French striker Neal Maupay from Brighton, for a fee of around £15m.

Brighton vs Everton Head-to-Head

As mentioned, the teams went many years without clashing. That changed in 2017 when Brighton achieved promotion to the Premier League for the first time, following a 34-year hiatus from the top flight.

In 2019, the AMEX Stadium was the site of an exciting Premier League clash between the Seagulls and the Toffees. Maupay equalised for Brighton, from the penalty spot, with 10 minutes of regulation time remaining before a late own-goal by Lucas Digne gave the home side all 3 points.

More recently, in May 2023, the visitors caused a massive upset with a resounding 5-1 win on the south coast. Abdoulaye Doucouré and Dwight McNeil scored twice apiece to boost Everton’s hopes against relegation.
