Brighton vs Arsenal History

These two have not played each other that many times, especially when compared to other Premier League match-ups, but there are plenty of connections between the two teams, and here are a number of players who have represented both Brighton and Arsenal.

Arsenal midfield legend Liam Brady came through the ranks at Highbury and made 307 appearances for the club before moving to Juventus in 1980. The Irishman went on to manage Brighton for two years between 1993 and 1995.

Recent examples of players who have played for both teams include Ben White, Danny Welbeck, Matthew Ryan, and Steve Sidwell (albeit the latter failed to make a senior appearance for Arsenal).

Brighton vs Arsenal Head-to-Head

When Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal side met Brighton in March 2018, it was their first Premier League clash on the south coast and the first time the two teams had met in league action in 35 years.

Brighton marked the occasion with a surprise win. Lewis Dunk gave the Seagulls an early lead, and Glenn Murray doubled the advantage on the half-hour. Pierre-Emerick Aubamayang reduced the arrears, but the North London team could not prevent a defeat.

Arsenal secured their first away win against Brighton of the Premier League era in December 2020, with Alexandre Lacazette scoring the only goal of the game.

2022/23 saw Arsenal put on a powerhouse display, with Bukayo Saka scoring after just two minutes before Martin Odegaard and Eddie Nketiah put Mikel Arteta’s side out of sight on 47 minutes.

Kaoru Mitoma scored for Brighton, only for Gabriel Martinelli to be sent clear by Odegaard to net Arsenal’s fourth. Impressive teenager Evan Ferguson got a second for the home side, but the damage had been done.

During the 35-year league hiatus, the two teams did meet regularly in cup battles. In 1987/88, the Gunners took on Brighton in the FA Cup Fourth Round, and goals from Kevin Richardson and Perry Groves saw them through 2-1.

In 2012/13, they met again in the Fourth Round and played out a five-goal thriller. Olivier Giroud put Arsenal ahead before Ashley Barnes equalized. Giroud struck again after 56 minutes, but Leonardo Ulloa leveled soon after before substitute Theo Walcott scored the winner with five minutes left on the clock.

Two years later, the two teams met once again in the FA Cup Fourth Round, and Theo Walcott was the opening scorer on this occasion, with cultured German international Mesut Ozil doubling their advantage after 24 minutes. Chris O’Grady pulled a goal back for Brighton, but Tomas Rosicky responded almost immediately before Sam Baldock pulled a goal back as Arsenal eased through 3-2 on their way to winning the FA Cup that year, where they beat Aston Villa 4-0 in the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium.
