The first meeting between these teams occurred in the Third Round of the 1924 FA Cup. Manchester City won the tie and progressed all the way to the semi-finals, losing to eventual champions Newcastle United.

More than half a century passed before Brighton and Man City met again, in the 1979/80 First Division. They continued to share battles into the 1980s, initially in the top flight before both teams were relegated in 1983.

• Gareth Barry made 175 appearances in Man City colours. Although the retired England midfielder didn’t feature for Brighton’s senior team, he was part of the club’s youth set-up until moving to Aston Villa aged 16.

• Wayne Bridge became a Man City player in 2009 and he joined Brighton, on loan from the Sky Blues, three years later.
