Brighton & Hove Albion vs Aston Villa History

This fixture pits one of England’s oldest football clubs against a team which has ascended the football pyramid in recent years. Brighton and Villa first met in the 1910 Charity Shield at Stamford Bridge; the Seagulls won by a single goal to nil.

Both clubs were part of the EFL Championship as recently as 2017 and, more recently, they each qualified for European football after finishing 6th and 7th in the 2022/23 Premier League.

There are also several players who have played for both these teams:

• Former England midfielder Gareth Barry swapped Brighton for Villa as a teenager and he went on to spend 12 years in the Midlands.

• Steve Sidwell was a Villa player from 2008-2011 and he would later spend two years on the south coast before hanging up his boots in 2018.

• Darren Bent joined Brighton in 2014, on loan from Villa.

These sides have shared a pitch just a handful of times in the first tier of English football. In 2019, they met in the Premier League for the first time in what was the 28th campaign since the top flight rebranded in 1992.

This fixture in November 2022 was just the 30th meeting between the teams. Alexis Mac Allister put the hosts ahead in the opening 60 seconds but two goals for Danny Ings secured all 3 points for Villa in the early stages of Unai Emery’s reign as manager at Villa Park.

They met in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup in 2010; Villa won 3-2, courtesy of goals from Ashley Young and Fabian Delph, and they would go on to reach the semi-finals, but lost out to eventual winners Chelsea.
