The 1894/95 season saw these clubs share a pitch for the first time, as the Villans won home & away versus Liverpool in the old First Division.

Just three years later, these teams met in the semi-finals of the FA Cup. AVFC won by three goals to zero at Bramall Lane and went on to win the trophy for the third time.
