Aston Villa vs Liverpool History
The 1894/95 season saw these clubs share a pitch for the first time, as Villa won home and away versus Liverpool in the old First Division.
Just three years later, these teams met in the semi-finals of the FA Cup. The Villains won by three goals to zero at Bramall Lane and went on to win the trophy for the third time.
In 1914, they clashed again in the FA Cup. Again they met in the last-four, though this time Liverpool marched to a 2-0 victory at White Hart Lane before ultimately losing to Burnley in the final.
Over the years, Villa and Liverpool have contested 200+ meetings. All but a few of these have come within the first tier of the English Football League.
There is a plethora of well-known individuals who have been involved with both these teams over the years.
• In 2005, Czech Republic striker Milan Baros moved from Merseyside to the Midlands for a transfer fee of £7m.
• In 2015, Liverpool purchased Belgium striker Christian Benteke from Villa, in a £32,5m deal. This came four years after the £20m move of Stewart Downing from Villa Park to Anfield.
• James Milner played for Villa and then Liverpool, on either side of a five-year spell with Manchester City.
• David James, Stan Collymore, Emile Heskey and Peter Crouch earned a combined 160 caps for England and they all played for both Villa and Liverpool during their respective careers.
• Gerard Houllier managed Liverpool for six years until 2004, before he was appointed as Martin O’Neill’s successor at Villa Park in 2010.

Particularly in the Premier League era, matches between these two teams have been closely-contested but Liverpool have tended to get the better of the Villains on several occasions.
In 2015/16, just four months after the arrival of Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool, the Reds scored six goals in this fixture with Daniel Strurridge and Divock Origi amongst the scorers.
In the 2020/21 Premier League season, Villa put seven goals past Liverpool for the first time ever. Ollie Watkins bagged a hat-trick and Jack Grealish scored twice in a famous 7-2 win over the Reds.
On Boxing Day 2022, Mohamed Salah and Virigil van Dijk were each on target in a 3-1 win for Liverpool at Villa Park.
