Aston Villa vs Wolverhampton Wanderers History

These are two of England’s oldest football clubs, both founder members of the Football League back in the 1880s.

The first on-field meeting between Villa and Wolves saw them drawn together in the Third Round of the 1886-87 FA Cup. A 2-2 draw forced a replay, which also ended as a stalemate, and a further two replays were required; Villa eventually progressed and they went on to celebrate a maiden FA Cup success that season.

Between then and 1920, Villa won the FA Cup a further five times in addition to five league titles.

Villa were First Division champions in 1981 and the following year became champions of Europe for the first time with success in the UEFA European Cup. The Villa Park club went on to beat FC Barcelona in the UEFA Super Cup.

The Villans have mostly been regulars in the top division since the Premier League era began in 1992, bar three consecutive seasons in the EFL Championship until 2019.

Wolves, too, have a fair amount of history to be proud of. They were crowned champions of England’s top flight three times in the 1950s, including back-to-back triumphs at the end of the decade. They have also picked up four FA Cup winners’ medals, including in 1960.

The club won its maiden League Cup in 1974 and repeated the feat in 1980.

Wolves played Premier League football for the first time in 2003/04, following a 19-year hiatus from the first tier. They were relegated to the Championship after just one season and later returned to the top flight in 2009.

There have been a host of players who have played for both these teams over the years:

• Scotland striker-turned-commentator Andy Gray left Villa Park for Wolves in 1979. The move was valued at £1,5m which, at the time, was a record fee for a transfer in England.
• Ex-Republic of Ireland captain Robbie Keane joined Wolves in 1996, shortly before turning 16, and progressed through the Academy at Molineux. He would later join Villa in 2012, on loan from LA Galaxy, towards the twilight of his playing career.
• Joleon Lescott also emerged from the youth ranks at Wolves in the late 1990s. The former England defender enjoyed the bulk of his career in the Premier League and joined Villa ahead of the 2015/16 season.
• In 2022, Villa signed Belgium midfielder Leander Dendoncker from Wolves in a deal worth around £13m.
• In addition, legendary manager Graham Taylor had spells in charge of both these clubs. He was twice manager at Villa Park (1987-1990; 2002-03) and took the job at Molineux Stadium for the 1994-95 season.
