Aston Villa vs West Ham United History

These teams go back more than a century. They first met in the Second Round of the FA Cup in 1913. AVFC stormed to a rampant 5-0 win at Villa Park and they went on to win this entire competition for a fifth time.

Aston Villa have celebrated seven league titles in the English top flight, though all of them came in the old First Division era. The club's most recent league success came in 1981, which saw the Midlands club become champions of Europe for the first time the following year. The Villans also subsequently defeated FC Barcelona to capture the UEFA Super Cup.

Since the Premier League era began in 1992, Aston Villa have mostly been a constant presence in the top flight. They were relegated to the EFL Championship in 2016 and played second-tier football for three seasons before making a return to the Premier League.

West Ham United have their own history to be proud of. In 1964, the Hammers won the FA Cup for the first time and they followed that up with victory in the Cup Winners’ Cup one year later. The East London side captured the FA Cup again in 1975 & once more in 1980.

Their most recent piece of silverware came in 2023, with victory over Fiorentina in the UEFA Conference League final. This was West Ham’s first major trophy for more than four decades.

WHUFC did not feature in the inaugural Premier League campaign, having been relegated from the top flight shortly before the competition reformatted. They did, however, achieve promotion in 1993 and remained in the Premiership for a decade.

In 2003, West Ham dropped down to the Championship before returning to the first tier at the second time of asking.

• Nigel Reo-Coker moved in the opposite direction in 2007. Captain of West Ham at the time, the midfielder completed a switch from London to the Midlands in a transfer worth £8,5m.

• Ex-Wales international James Collins left West Ham for Aston Villa in 2009 before the defender returned to Upton Park three years later.

• Joe Cole, another England star of yesteryear, completed a free transfer to AVFC in 2014. The attacking midfielder had returned to his boyhood club in early 2013, following spells with Chelsea & Liverpool, before joining the Villans 18 months later.

• In January 2023, Danny Ings swapped his Aston Villa shirt for that of West Ham in a £15m deal.

Aston Villa vs West Ham United Head-to-Head

Following their maiden clash in 1913, the teams were again drawn against one another in the 1977 FA Cup; AVFC won this Fourth Round tie, 3-0.

They met once more in the 1980 FA Cup, this time in the quarter-finals. West Ham were the victors and they went on to beat Arsenal in the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium, courtesy of a single goal scored by Trevor Brooking.
