Everton FC vs Aston Villa History

Two of England's oldest football clubs go toe-to-toe for the umpteenth time. Both of them were founder members of the Football League more than 125 years ago, and as such there is an abundance of history between the clubs.

Since their first-ever meeting back in 1888, Everton and Villa have shared a pitch more than 200 times. Most of these have come in the top flight of English football, be it in the old First Division or the modern day Premier League.

Each of them were ever-present in the top flight for 24 consecutive seasons following the inception of the Premier League in 1992.

They have shared countless enticing battles as well as a fair share of players who have played for both teams in question.

• Former England defender Martin Keown completed a move from Villa to Everton in 1989, costing the Toffees in the region of £750k.

• Likewise, David Ginola also left the Midlands for Merseyside in 2002 – one year before the France winger announced his retirement.

• More recently, Idrissa Gueye signed for Everton from Villa in 2016 while Lucas Digne moved in the opposite direction in 2022, in a deal worth £25m.

During the mid-to-late 2010s, Everton and Villa each endured spells in which they challenged (and qualified) for European football under David Moyes and Martin O'Neill, respectively.

Said managers faced off in the 2008/09 season, as their teams shared the spoils in a captivating 3-3 draw at Villa Park. The Toffees led for the majority of the contest, courtesy of goalscorers Marouane Fellaini, Tim Cahill and Steven Pienaar. But the Villans rescued a precious point, with thanks to goals from John Carew, James Milner and Gareth Barry.

The teams have met several times in the FA Cup, including the 1897 final. The Villans won 3-2 and celebrated their third FA Cup triumph. They met again, eight years later, in the semi-finals and Villa were again victorious before going on to defeat Newcastle United in the final.

More recently, in 2000, Everton and Villa were paired in the FA Cup quarter-finals. Once more, the latter emerged victorious and again they advanced to the final at Wembley, albeit a losing effort (1-0) to Chelsea.
