This is a special fixture as it features two of the original founding members of the Football League. These teams first met in 1888/89, in the inaugural season of the First Division. It wasn’t until their sixth meeting that Burnley finally recorded victory over Everton.

The clubs’ maiden clash in the FA Cup came in 1892. Burnley won 3-1 in this First Round tie at Anfield, Everton’s home ground at the time.

They met again in the 1925 FA Cup as Everton were the winners on this occasion, though the Toffees were later defeated by eventual champions Sheffield United.
