Everton vs Manchester City History

As two of the biggest clubs in English football, the shared history between Everton and Manchester City is expansive, with many individuals having represented both teams, including defender Richard Dunne who played 72 games for the Goodison Park side before moving to Manchester City, where he played for a decade, racking up over 350 appearances and becoming something of a club legend.

Sylvain Distin also played for both, as did Joleon Lescott, Gareth Barry, and John Stones, who was purchased by Pep Guardiola from Everton in a massive £47.5m deal.

Everton vs Manchester City Head to Head

These two teams have met almost 200 times in league and cup action, and the first clash between Everton and Manchester City took place in 1899.

In 1965/66, the two sides endured an epic FA Cup clash. The first meeting took place at Maine Road, and the Quarter-Final clash ended goalless. Three days later, the two played a replay at Goodison Park, which again ended without a goal being scored; a second replay took place at a neutral venue, and on this occasion, Everton got the upper hand and went on to beat Sheffield Wednesday in the final at Wembley Stadium.

The first Premier League clash came in October 1992, and Manchester City were the victors at Goodison Park on that occasion thanks to two goals from Mike Sheron and a third from David White, with an Ian Brightwell own goal being Everton’s only response.

In January 2017, Everton thumped Manchester City 4-0, with Romelu Lukaku, Kevin Mirallas, Tom Davies, and Ademola Lookman all netting against Pep Guardiola’s side in what was his biggest defeat as manager of the Premier League side at the time.

In 2020/21, Manchester City made two trips to face Everton at Goodison Park. In February, goals from Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez, and Bernardo Silva helped Guardiola’s side to a 3-1 win, with Richarlison responding for the Toffees.

A month later, City triumphed in the FA Cup, with Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne scoring two late goals to secure passage to the next round.

During Manchester City’s epic 2022/23 treble-winning season, Guardiola’s side brushed Everton aside 3-0 on their own patch, with Ilkay Gundogan scoring twice and Erling Haaland grabbing the other in yet another commanding display on Merseyside.
