Everton vs Ipswich Town History

Both of these clubs were founded in 1878, though just one of them would become a founder member of the Football League a decade later. Everton FC took part in the inaugural season of the competition back in 1888/89, finishing 8th out of 12 competing clubs.

Everton became champions of the First Division in 1891, though the club’s next league title only came in 1915. The Toffees celebrated a maiden FA Cup title during that period, thanks to a narrow 1-0 victory over Newcastle United in the 1906 FA Cup final.

Ipswich Town would only be admitted to the Football League in 1938, and the Suffolk-based side would have to wait another 23 years before achieving top-flight status for the first time. The Blues earned promotion to the First Division in 1961, and they subsequently went on to clinch league honours at the first time of asking as Alf Ramey’s team accomplished the unthinkable.

Everton would reclaim the title the very next season, marking the club’s sixth league success, followed by a third FA Cup crown in 1966. ITFC became first-time FA Cup winners in 1978, courtesy of a 1-0 win against Arsenal at Wembley Stadium.

Ipswich won the UEFA Cup (precursor to the Europa League) in 1981, while Everton FC captured the FA Cup once and the First Division twice from 1984-87.

Both clubs competed in the debut season of the Premier League, though Ipswich Town would last just three seasons before succumbing to relegation to the new First Division. ITFC returned to the Premiership in 2000 but dropped back down two years later and remained outside of the top flight until 2024. The Blues made a grand return to the Premier League, gaining promotion in back-to-back seasons to rise from League One up to the EFL Championship and directly to the Premier League.

The first time Everton FC and Ipswich Town took to the pitch was in the Third Round of the 1953 FA Cup. The Toffees were 3-2 winners on their way to reaching the semi-finals that year.

There were goals aplenty when these teams contested a league fixture for the first time, in the 1961/62 First Division. Everton won 5-2 at home before ITFC claimed a 4-2 win at Portman Road.

Everton and Ipswich faced off in the FA Cup quarter-finals in 1980 and again five years later. The Toffees were victorious on either occasion, though they would fall short of the FA Cup title both times.

The teams met in the inaugural season of the Premier League, as Everton recorded a comfortable 3-0 win in this fixture. ITFC were victorious at Goodison Park in both the 2000/01 & 2001/02 seasons, though the clubs would go 22 years without sharing a pitch until Ipswich Town finally sealed a long-awaited return to the Premier League in 2024.
