Everton FC vs AFC Bournemouth History

There is very little history between these two clubs, having only contested their 10th meeting in 2017.

Everton and Bournemouth first clashed in 1937, in the Third Round of the FA Cup. Played at Goodison Park, the home team won by five goals to zero.

The Toffees and the Cherries didn’t battle one another for almost 50 years until 1985, when they met in the second round of the League Cup. England striker Gary Lineker scored twice in a 5-2 aggregate win for Everton.

Another three decades went by without the teams sharing a pitch. In 2015, Everton and Bournemouth contested a league fixture for the very first time.

2023 marked the 28th consecutive year that Everton hadn’t celebrated silverware, while Bournemouth had yet to win a first major trophy.

In recent years there have been a handful of players who have worn the colours of both teams involved in this fixture.

• Sylvain Distin was an Everton player for six years, after which he switched to Bournemouth ahead of the 2015/16 season. The French defender retired the following year, having amassed a mega 469 appearances in the Premier League.

• Josh King made more than 175 appearances for Bournemouth after moving there in 2015. The Norway attacker transferred to Everton in January 2021, in a deal reported to be worth £5m.

• Asmir Begović left Chelsea for Bournemouth in 2017, for a fee of £10m. In 2021, he signed for Everton on a free transfer.

• Arnaut Danjuma spent two years at Bournemouth before completing a £20m move to Villarreal. The Netherlands winger joined Everton on loan at the start of the 2023/24 season.

Everton FC vs AFC Bournemouth Head-to-Head

Bournemouth were winners of the EFL Championship in 2014/15, thus earning automatic promotion to the Premier League, and subsequently faced Everton in a league meeting for the first time ever.

In this fixture, Leighton Baines scored the winning goal as the Toffees claimed a 2-1 victory over the Cherries.

The following season, these teams played out a thrilling nine-goal contest in which Romelu Lukaku netted four times in a 6-3 win for Everton. Ross Barkley was also on the scoresheet, while Josh King scored twice for the away side.

King was on target again when Bournemouth visited the blue half of Merseyside in 2020. The Cherries won 3-1 for their first-ever victory at Goodison Park.

This fixture in the 2023/24 Premier League campaign saw the hosts beat Bournemouth by three goals to nil.
