Everton vs Liverpool History

Everton FC was formed in 1878 and the club was one of 12 founding members of the Football League 10 years later, winning the third edition of the First Division in 1890/91. The Blues initially played their home games at Anfield, though the owner of the grounds, John Houlding, would go on to form Liverpool FC in 1892. As a result Everton relocated to Goodison Park, less than a mile away.

Everton won the FA Cup for the first time in 1906, five years after their local rivals had claimed a maiden First Division title. Everton were the reigning champions of the English top flight at the start of both WWI and WWII.

The first real golden period of Liverpool FC began in the 60s and 70s, during Bill Shankly's time as manager. The Scotsman oversaw the Reds capture three First Division crowns, two FA Cups and the UEFA Cup (now known as the Europa League). Shankly's assistant and eventual successor, Bob Paisley, took Liverpool even further with another six league titles and three European Cups as the red half of Merseyside became one of the most dominant outfits in world football.

Paisley retired in 1983, after which Everton enjoyed a brief resurgence. The Toffees won two league titles and one FA Cup in the space of four years under manager Howard Kendall. Liverpool would win the First Division three times more before having to endure a 30-year wait to be crowned champions of England for a 19th time. The drought came to an end in 2020 as Liverpool were crowned Premier League champions for the very first time, one year after Jürgen Klopp's side had lifted the UEFA Champions League.

Merseyside Derby Stats and Mutual Connections

No player has scored more goals in the Merseyside derby than Ian Rush. The former Wales forward played a total 649 times for Liverpool, scoring 336 goals during his 15 years at Anfield. As a Liverpool player Rush netted 20 goals in 34 matches against Everton.

A handful of players, and even managers, have history with both of these Merseyside rivals, notably:

• Peter Beardsley signed for Liverpool in 1987, joining from Newcastle United for a British record transfer fee of £1.9m. The England striker won the First Division twice and the FA Cup once during his four-year stay at Anfield before switching directly to Goodison Park.

• Rafael Benítez was Liverpool manager for six years from 2004-10. The Spanish coach guided the Reds to Champions League glory in his first season at the helm, but wasn't quite able to achieve Premier League success. Benítez went on to manage top European teams including Inter Milan and Real Madrid before becoming Everton manager in 2021, though he lasted just over six months at Goodison Park with the Toffees struggling towards the bottom of the table.

Everton vs Liverpool Head-to-Head

Liverpool beat their local rivals in the 1986 FA Cup final and again on the same stage three years later at Wembley Stadium, with Ian Rush scoring twice on each occasion.

The Reds have been far more triumphant at Goodison Park than Everton have been at Anfield in the Premier League era. Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen scored as the visitors claimed a 3-1 victory in September 2001.

More recently, in December 2021, Mohamed Salah netted twice as the Reds ran out 4-1 winners on enemy territory. Jordan Henderson and Diogo Jota were also on the scoresheet that night.
