Fulham vs Liverpool History

Fulham and Liverpool met for the first time in 1912, at Craven Cottage, in the Second Round of the FA Cup as the hosts claimed a 3-0 win.

The teams would only meet in this competition until WWII and they eventually contested a maiden league fixture in the 1949/50 First Division, at which time Liverpool had celebrated five league titles to Fulham's zero. The Merseyside outfit continued to widen the gap in the 1960s as manager Bill Shankly built a title-winning side.

Shankly delivered three First Division titles before stepping down in 1974, following which his right-hand man Bob Paisley took over as manager and steered the Reds to even greater success over the following nine years. Paisley was the mastermind behind Liverpool winning the European Cup three times in the space of five years, in addition to six league titles and several other cups.

Liverpool began to fall off into the 90s and the club remained deadlocked on 18 league titles for 30 years until finally hoisting a maiden Premier League crown in 2020. Jürgen Klopp had also set up the Reds to capture UEFA Champions League glory the previous year.

On the other hand, Fulham still awaits a first major trophy more than 140 years after the club was founded. The Cottagers ended runners-up to city rivals West Ham United in the 1975 FA Cup final.

There are plenty of connections between Fulham and Liverpool, with a number of well-known players having played for both these sides.

• Liverpool purchased Republic of Ireland right-back Steve Finnan from Fulham in 2003. He racked up 200+ appearances for both teams.

• Harvey Elliott was just 16 when he moved from Fulham to Liverpool in 2019 and he has become a first-team regular under Jürgen Klopp. Elliott made more than 100 senior appearances for the Reds before turning 21.
• Harry Wilson developed in the Liverpool Academy and, after several loan spells away from Anfield, the Wales winger was sold to Fulham for £12m in 2021.

The teams shared a pitch for only the 75th time in January 2024. This largely comes down to Fulham's absence from the top flight from 1968-2001, during which time the teams met exclusively in the League Cup.

Liverpool's first Premier League visit to Craven Cottage came in March 2002. Nicolas Anelka opened the scoring in a 2-0 victory for the away side. The Cottagers took revenge the following season, beating Liverpool 3-2 in this fixture.
